Does Living Longer Cause Divorce?

In the old days, not many people lived long enough to be married 30+ years. One or the other died in industrial accidents, farm accidents, childbirth, etc. But today, people are living longer lives. I recently helped two completely different clients.

One involved mediating a divorce for a couple who had been married for 54 years! My first question of course was, “Why?” In response one said, age 78, “I have 12 more good years in me. I want to enjoy them.”

Another client, age 80, after 37 years of marriage explained, “We’ve grown apart.”

So is divorce among those individuals who have lived the married life for 30+ years more prominent now because people are living longer healthy lives?
